I observed an older brother and sister finger painting. When I was able to get a hold on the fingerpaints my vision spontaneously unfolded in six bright colors of self-expression across the kitchen floor. This is how I came into art in the first place. Self-expression redirected by the words. “Why don’t you draw a picture.” Settled me in a posture of finding what was awesome in the world around me. It brings comfort, to me, to describe awesomeness on a flat surface or in words. I spend a lot of time in exploration and creating compositions. Below the surface a deep unity anchors everything. I work with the human figure, places and other things. Going home is a theme I keep coming back to in my work. I create to speak to many in the pure language of geometry and unlock the transcendental. Capturing and solidifying the call of beauty is meaningful to me. Belonging to the tradition animated by a unique longing for a foundation that nothing can shake is how I was trained as an artist. I create to be at ease with the unsolved and unfinished and to feel life in the beat of my heart. I value teachers who help me see what is secretly there, face my aloneness and realize myself as an artist. There is a secret place in the heart from which community emerges. We need perception, vision and a certain rhythm of silence between the artist and his model and the viewer before a work of art.
